Shanghai Rush E12 Finale

Episode 12 Finale  Pudong

Brian Yang:

This is where all began. And this is where all ends. We are back in Pudong to decide who will be the first ever Shanghai Rush champion. The grand prize, one-year accommodation in two luxury villas at Gemdale Green World. Today our race begins of the roof of the tallest building of China, Shanghai World Financial Center. Ladies and gentlemen, I am your host Brian Yang. This is Shanghai Rush.

Over the past twelve weeks, our contestants have raced from one end of Shanghai to the other. They faced cruelly physical challenges, tested their skills behind the wheel, and experienced 5000 years of Chinese culture. Here are look back at some of the season’s highlights.

It all started with ten teams. One by one they fell up the map*. Some couldn’t get along, some couldn’t speak Chinese, and some just couldn’t do anything. Now we are down to our final race and our final two teams, Hudd and Anna, and Richard and Alice.

They are fighting it out for the last and the biggest prize of the season, the Shanghai Rush Grand Prize Villas. Whoever finishes first today will win a year accommodation in two luxury villas here at Gemdale Green World.

Today’s episode begins on top of the tallest building in China, the Shanghai World Financial Center.

Brian Yang:

Good morning contestants and congratulations. We started with ten teams and now we are down to just two. You’ve proven to be the teams to beat. Today is our last race. Today you will cross the final finish line. And it all starts right here on top of China’s tallest building. This is the Shanghai World Financial Center. From up here, you can see how far you’ve come. We’ve sent you through eleven districts and you’ve seen the best of the city has to offer. Today, we return to where it all began, Pudong. Nothing symbolizes Shanghai * better than the skyline seen before you. This is the phase of the 21st century China. This is “better city, better life”. All of you came here in search of a better life. Hudd and Anna, young American couple, arrived in Shanghai with a dream. When that dream fell through, you found yourselves a new one here on Shanghai Rush. Richard and Alice, overseas Chinese, Dartmouth MBA graduates, you came to Shanghai with your own ideals of success. Today, one of you will realize a new dream. A dream that is only possible because you came here to Shanghai. Your first clue in the final episode is hidden on the a hundred floor observatory here at the Shanghai World Financial Center. This is the last time I am going to say this. Are you ready? Go!

The teams next ticket is hidden somewhere in the fish tanks of the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium.

Teams must now head to the Daoist Temple at 476 Yuanshen Road.

This is no time for Hudd and Anna to lose their cool. With Richard and Alice so far ahead, their survival is at stake. Richard and Alice are headed to the Wet Market with Hudd and Anna are still fishing for their ticket.

Richard and Alice have already arrived at Shanghai Wild-insect Kingdom to look for their next ticket.

From the insect museum, teams have to find their way to the Maglev station.

Teams must now take the Maglev to Pudong Airport where they will play their final game.

This is the final game our contestants are going to play. Each team must collect 50 luggage cars. But they can only pick up single cars left unattended. And each team member can only collect four at a time. Once our contestants have completed their final game, they will make their way to the final finish line.

Finish Line:

Brian Yang:

Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to the final finish line of Shanghai Rush. We started with ten fantastic teams. But tonight it all comes down to a competition between two married couples, Richard and Alice, and Hudd and Anna. Two young couples who came to Shanghai to make their dreams come true, tonight one couple will realize their dream that could only happen here in Shanghai. Welcome Richard and Alice, our grand prize winners. This is our final finish line at the China Pavilion of World Expo 2010. Congratulations!

We have people from all around the world to apply to be on Shanghai Rush. They came from the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia, which is why we chose this site to be our final location. In less than a year, Shanghai will make history by hosting countries from all over the world for Expo 2010. The China Pavilion building you see behind you is the symbol of “better city better life”. It’s on this historic site that I am proud to announce that you are the winners of the first ever season of Shanghai Rush. For coming in first, you win two luxury villas at Gemdale Green Spring Town in Jiading. Congratulations you two!

What was your favorite experience on the show?

Richard: I would say the whole thing has just been a tremendous experience Brian. I mean, we achieved what we set out to do. We stretched ourselves physically and mentally in different ways. We experienced Shanghai like we have never before and most importantly we’ve made friends that we will probably keep forever. You know I have to give it to Hudd and Anna, they have been in tough competition, not just this final episode, but throughout the whole season. They really keeps us on a toast, and it’s not easy competing with them. It’s nerve racking, I have to tell you Brian.

You guys did a tremendous job. But as we all know, there can only be one winner. Our second team put up a fantastic fight. They were ahead of the pack the entire season. And everyone knew they were the team to be. Hudd and Anna, welcome to the final finish line on Shanghai Rush. You guys won four episodes, more than any other team. What happen in this last race?

Anna: We blew it.

Hudd: I don’t know. Everything seemed to go wrong today. We have all our luck run out.

Richard and Alice I believe you have something to share with us.

Richard: Because we have such a great time and have built such a great poor with all the other teams, we’ve decided that if we were to win Shanghai Rush, we would make one of the villas the Shanghai Rush Villa, where all the other teams are welcomed to stay whenever they want.

After Interview:

Hudd: From day one we’ve picked out Richard and Alice as our biggest competition. We’ve always known they don’t make mistakes. This is David versus Goliath. And Goliath triumphed today. That’s all the story.

Anna: We’ve decided that if we get the villas we will stay in Shanghai. If we don’t, I know I can find a job at home in California. So it was like stay or go, Shanghai. You know, either we are out of here, we gonna pack, if we get everything, we are going to stay coz we love here, it’s so fun. But now we are going.

Epilogue:

Hudd and Anna returned to Clifornia. Hudd is on his way to becoming a Mandarin teacher and Anna is looking forward to raising a family someday. They have no plans to return to Shanghai but say that life can change in a flash.

Richard and Alice live in Shanghai. They’re still successful in their careers – and life in general. Richard has a new job and says he and Alice are “living life to the fullest”. The door to one of their new villas is always open to any of the other contestants.

Nic has launched a new career as a model and Liz will say goodbye to Shanghai at the end of the year when she moves to Boston to begin Business School. They are both single.

Helmut and Muzi are still dating. Muzi continues to be a manager at work and home and Helmut recently found a new job in Shanghai. He loks forward to the day when Muzi will take his hand in marriage.

Justin and Matti completed their Mandarin studies at Jiaotong University. Justin has enrolled for another semester and Matti has accepted a management position at a five-star hotel in Chongqing.

AJ has left Shanghai to pursure a Master’s Degree at a university in Sydney, Australia. Rebecca is a student in Shanghai but will soon be the new host of America’s Funniest Home Videos on ICS.

Fernanda and Rodrigo are still studying at Rabbles Design Institute. Fernando forgave Rodrigo for the accident in Hongkou, though he still blames himself. The couple plans to stay in Shanghai for a long time.

Norma will soon celebrate her 50th birthday with friends in America. David is attending a university in China. His Mandarin improves every day, but his knowledge of Shanghai remains limited.

Lauren and William have parted ways. William is studying mechanical engineering and hopes to take his skills with him abroad someday. Lauren is moving to Los Angeles to pursue her singing career.

The M&Ms have returned to the United States. Marilyn is job-hunting in New York City and Melanie is traveling before starting her job search. The girls are now afraid of driving.

Notes:

Hudd and Anna comment on their only mistake in the race. I feel so sorry for them.

Hudd: Whenever things are going good, we are just so excited. We couldn’t be happier. If things are going bad, things are going wrong, just tie a rock around our neck and throw us in the Yangtze. When Anna gets down, I also get down. I am kind of communion. I can hold it up for a little bit. But then when I get down, I start throwing rocks to it. Then we were just stuck on the bottom, and it takes a lot to get back up.

Anna: It’s not just like things are going wrong in this game or this day, I start building it up into like my life is over if I don’t … it’s like I am a failure at everything. I think that Richard is a little scary when he comes to the game. He is super in tense. He wants to do well. I think for his own personal sense of pride, not to like make others hurt. He is serious about being number one.

Alice: I think it’s a good thing that other teams think that we come across as being very in tense. And in fact, we are in tense most of the time.

Richard: The fact is that we are pretty in tense, whatever the task or challenge is. We usually want to win and give our best shot. So we are gonna be super focus and in tense.

Shanghai Rush E11

Episode 11  Huangpu

Brian Yang:

Welcome to Huangpu District. This is the historic heart of Shanghai. From the Bund to People’s Square, in the city that’s always changing, it’s comfort in knowing that something is here to stay. The same can be set for our contestants. By the end of today, we will know who our final teams are. Ladies and gentlemen, I am your host Brian Yang. And this is Shanghai Rush.

Today’s district is Huangpu. If you look at the city’s past and its present, you will find that Huangpu has always been at the heart of Shanghai. Shanghai was born 400 years ago and what is now called the old city. Going back to this district’s roots means going back to the roots of Shanghai itself. Today the landmarks in Huangpu are not just traces of history. People’s Square, Huangpu’s world famous river bund are just as alive and popular as they were in the past. The buildings lying the Bund have been renovated and restored, attracting visitors from around the globe. Today our contestants will be among those visitors. Our race through Huangpu begins at the historic Bund 18.

Brian Yang:

Good morning contestants. Right now we are on the Bund. For people from all around the world, this is Shanghai. As you’ve seen a lot of cities so far, but now near the end of the long journey, you’ve come to the centre of it. There is one more finish line across for the final leg, last week, we brought Richard and Alice. But no teams were eliminated. But today, it’s double elimination. Today, two teams get the X. Go to the Bund promenade to find your first ticket. Are you ready? Go.

For more than a century, this pedestrian thoroughfare has strived as one of the busiest shopping streets in the world. Tens of thousands of visitors flood to this commercial street every day. Here teams have to find ten foreigners from ten different countries and take a picture with each of them.

From East Nanjing Road, teams are traveling to Cabaret at Bund 6.

2. 2 oz. Scotch Whisky

3. 1 ounce Grand Marnier

4. Dash of Lemon

5. Dash of Sugar

6. Dash of Bitter

From Cabaret, teams go to the Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. This is the sister restaurant of the original Jiading location. It’s next door to the old city’s 500-year-old Yu Garden. Outside the restaurant, crowds of tourists and locals still store some of the city’s oldest sites. But you will find our teams waiting in line for their next challenge.

From the Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant, teams go to the Shanghai Southern Bund Fabric Market.

From Fabric Market, teams are heading to the Shanghai Grand Theater at People’s Square.

Our contestants race is not yet over. Teams will be released from the Grand Theater in order of their race standings. Now all that’s left them to the finish line is a rush hour taxi ride from Shanghai Grand Theater to the Dongmen Ferry Terminal. Hudd and Anna are tied with Nic and Liz for the first place. But the other two teams are just behind them. They’ve all come a long way in Shanghai Rush. But tonight two teams will say goodbye. The fate of our teams will be in the taxi drivers’ hands.

Winner: Hudd & Anna

There isn’t anyone surprises at your guys here. You guys have proven to be the hungriest, the most resourceful, and probably the most fearless couple here on Shanghai Rush. You’ve won three episodes. Today, here in Huangpu, it’s number fourth. You make it to the final episode. No one deserves it more. You have one day left. For winning another episode, two sets of skin care products from Kanebo cosmetics. Congratulations. Fantastic job. Get ready. One more episode, Shanghai Rush is that close.

Second Place: Richard & Alice.

Richard and Alice, here we are, the finish line. You guys proved us right in bringing you back. You finished second today. You barely missed out on the first place in fact. You made it to the final round. What do you feel right now? … “Beyond words, right now. Speechless.”… You both are fierce couple, a great team. We look forward to the final episode. Congratulations.

Last place: Nic & Liz, Helmut & Muzi

Nic and Liz, you guys were the underdogs and kept over achieving. What do you think could have gone better today? … “Our taxi driver didn’t know where the ferry was. So that definitely cost some time.”… It breaks my heart to have to tell you this, but I have to tell you for coming in third, on this double elimination day, unfortunately, you are off Shanghai Rush.

Nic & Liz, “This experience … I think Liz and I can grab a lot from this. Like, we have met so many people, new friends, which is awesome. We’ve seen so many awesome parts of Shanghai that we would have never seen, if we had not been on the show. I definitely have a more refreshing outlook on living here. You know, we were kind of bored before starting the show. It saved our lives. It really did.”

Helmut and Muzi, welcome to the finish line. Here on the Huangpu River, you finished fourth today. Congratulations again on being this far in Shanghai Rush. You guys have been eliminated.

Helmut, “For me, I have proved myself for my age, what I can do. It’s a lot of things that I haven’t done for long long time.”

Muzi, “We are not disappointed to lose. We have gone so far in this ways. And we have proved to everyone how tough we are, how competitive we are, how strong we are. And that’s all we wanted.”

Notes:

Anna, “I don’t like it when the game is unfair. There is no point in anyone who is doing it.” This is her comment on Helmut and Muzi. Helmut said the last one of the kite is broken. So it fell on the ground.

Anna: It’s also very fun. I love exploring and seeing the city in this way. It’s crazy and fast. I wanna appreciate all this. But at the same time, it’s just fun to be with all the other contestants going crazy. I like it.

Anna: when we see Helmut and Muzi, we get frustrated. We are always be right behind them, or they be right behind us.

Helmut: I must say when I see Hudd and Anna, I will be a little bit pissed off. They always cash up in front of us. I don’t know how they do this.

I was bit surprised at hearing Muzi on the taxi commenting Helmut, “You were looking pretty breasty. But your speed was like really slow. I can’t believe that Anna is faster than you …” I like Helmut. I am touched by his sincere and his love to Muzi. He spewed the steamed bun and ate it back. He said, “I don’t want to lose anything.” Actually, Anna was the last one.

Shanghai Rush E10

Episode 10  Luwan

On the last episode of Shanghai Rush, teams arrived at the House of Peking Opera, where Matti showed off his best soprano, and the rest of the teams took the stage with various results. Helmut and Muzi nearly flowed*, but the resilient German led his team to their second victory. Matti and Justin failed the most physical challenge yet. And the boys checked out of the Hilton for the last time.

Brian Yang:

Luwan may be one of the city’s smallest districts, but it has a huge influence over Shanghai and the rest of China. New developments like Xintiandi showed that Shanghai can preserve its past while embracing the future. Today there are dozens of Xintiandis sprouting up all over China. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m your host Brian Yang.

Today’s district is Luwan. Boarded by the Huangpu River to the south, Huaihai Road to the north, Luwan is in many ways the center of Shanghai. This relatively small downtown district has led a nation-wide trend in urban development. Luwan has transformed its historic lane neighborhoods into modern hubs of art, shops and dining, all the while preserving its Shikumen houses and life style. With seamless blend of commerce and culture, Luwan has rapidly become one of the most fashionable communities in all of China. Today our teams will race through the narrow land to the wide boulevards of this district. And it all starts in Xintiandi.

Brian Yang:

Good morning contestants. Welcome to Luwan district. This morning we are in Xintiandi. A few years ago, this was once an old Shikumen neighborhood. Today, it’s one of the most famous urban developments in all of Asia. Change has been fast here in Luwan. The same goes for our show. In our last episode, we were down to just three teams. Today it is our first and only bring-back episode. We had one team who left our show who is not eliminated. Today, we are bringing them back.

Richard and Alice, please step forward. You left when Alice injured her arm between shows. Are you now ready to compete? Are there any objections? No? Good.

Your first ticket of today is hidden somewhere here on the ground of Xintiandi. Ready? Go.

From Xintiandi teams are traveling by taxi to Taikang Road, another old Shikumen neighborhood that has been transformed into a modern shopping heaven. Clothing boutiques, art galleries and cafes share the narrow lanes of this once quiet residential neighborhood. This is where teams will find their next ticket.

From Taikang Road teams are heading to Dongtai Road. Here is one of the city’s most popular antique markets. Teams would have to show off their bargaining skills. First they must buy an item from a minimum of 20 RMB. Then they must sell their item for profit. As long as they come up one RMB ahead, they can go on to the next location.

Lupu Bridge is the world’s largest arch bridge. Our contestants would have to climb to the top to get t heir next ticket.

Brian Yang:

Hi, we are here today in a classic Shanghai lane that was built in 1930s and with me is Jeffery Zhang, the prince of Kunqun, which is considered the mother of Chinese opera. Jeffery, thank you for join us in Shanghai Rush. You are going to tell us what our contestants’ game is next, right?

Jeffrey: The name of the game is Gun Tiequan. It is an old lane game in Shanghai.

Brian: We saw you played a little while ago. And you look really good at it. What it take you think for our contestants to do well at this game?

Jeffrey: I think balance, coordination and confidence.

Brian: Thanks again for dropping by. Let’s see how our contestants roll it out.

Each team must roll the iron ring through a course set up in the historic 1930s lane. Teammates must take turns rolling the ring from one checkpoint to the next. Messed up, they have to start over from the last checkpoint.

Contestants must now make their way from Cité Bourgogne to Taiping Lake, located just to the east of Xintiandi. Here, teams will compete the last game of the day.

Teams had their times clocked when they arrived at Taiping Lake. Every contestant were now try to bike around the lake, going as slow as possible. The longer they take to finish the race, the more time they have to deduct from the total score.

Winner: Nic & Liz

You guys are predictably unpredictable. You come in first today. I have to ask you Nic. Where on earth did you learn to ride a bike that slow? In circus. Good job. You take number one. For coming in first today in Luwan, you get two vouchers to O Spa.

Last Place: Hudd & Anna

You guys have been on an amazing run here on Shanghai Rush. But today, in Luwan, small missteps cost you. What did it go wrong?

Hudd: I think we had a pretty good day. The whole day there was no problems as soon as we …

Anna: I just can’t ride the bike slow.

Hudd: We can’t do things slow very well.

Anna: … too fast. We always in a rush.

Brian: You know the rules. You come in last and you are off Shanghai Rush. But because today is a bring-back episode, you guys stay alive. You are still on Shanghai Rush. We will see you in the next episode.

Anna: We deserve to be last. We did it terrible.

Hudd: We totally choked. We are really happy that we a still on. And we are ready for the next race.

1. soprano 女高音

2. Shikumen 石库门

3. Gun Tirquan 滚铁圈

4. Kunqu 昆曲

Dongtai Road 东台路

Lupu Bridge 卢浦大桥

Notes:

Nic & Liz: When any team comes to us and ask for help, or they look like they are lost, we immediately back off. I don’t want them to ask us for help. I don’t want to know like what they are thinking, where they are going. We didn’t build any alliances with any teams. I think that’s smart. Building alliances could get you a trouble. Exactly.

Hudd & Anna: Nic & Liz never give us any clues. If we were in a situation when we needed help, people would not give it to us. If Nic & Liz needed some help, anybody would have given them help. They were never come up to the top of the pack. So it’s like no worries. They are sure… But for us, if we need help, nothing.

Hudd asked the taxi driver of Richard & Alice on where they are going when the team must head to Lupu Bridge.

Richard & Alice: I think Hudd & Anna they can be a little tricky, a little slick. When they are in a lead, or they get ahead of someone, I think they are a little celebrating. To me that’s a little insensitive or disrespectful.

Hudd & Anna: Sorry about sneaking that question on your taxi driver. That’s our only option. There is no idea where we are going.

Shanghai Rush E9

Episode 9  Xuhui

Brian Yang:

Art deco villas and hyper-modern shopping malls, in Xuhui district you can find Shanghai’s past and its future. In the quiet treeland streets of Fuxin Lu to the urban hustle and bustle of Xujiahui, this district has it all. But do our teams have what it takes? Over the course of today, we will find out. Ladies and gentlemen, I am your host Brian Yang. And this is Shanghai Rush.

Today’s district is Xuhui. Home to Shanghai’s newest railway station as well as China’s second largest sports stadium, Xuhui is one of Shanghai’s busiest districts. With its crowded streets, high-rise office towers and shopping malls, Xuhui is where Shanghai comes to work, shop and play. Its history dates back hundreds of years. The district is name after Xu Guangqi, a Ming Dynasty official and leading scientist of his day. Xuhui has always been the center of learning, which is why we’ve chosen Xuhui’s Jiaotong University to as a starting point of today’s race.

Brian Yang:

Good morning contestants. And welcome to Xuhui district. After losing Rebecca and AJ at the ski slopes, we are down to just four teams. You are the final four. Our starting point is Jiaotong University. For more than 100 years, this school has been home to some of Shanghai’s best and brightest. But you are going to use more than brains to get through today’s race. We’ve hidden four tickets in four opposite directions right across this 24 hectare campus. These would be the toughest tickets to find yet. Are you ready? Go.

From Jiaotong University, teams are taking a short taxi ride to Xu Guangqi Park.

From Xu Guangqi Park, teams are heading to Shanghai Peking Opera House. This theatre company was founded in 1955 and is considered one of the 10 best peking opera houses in China. Its two companies are world renowned for their performances, including the Ming Dynasty drama, the Jade *.

From Shanghai Peking Opera House, teams must find their next ticket on Hengshan Road, hanging somewhere on the trees along side Xujiahui Park.

From Hengshan Road, teams must take the metro to Longhua Temple. Founded almost 1800 years ago during the Three Kingdoms Period, this is the largest Buddha’s temple in Shanghai. In the shadow of its seven-storey pagoda, teams will find their next ticket.

From Longhua Temple, teams travel to Shanghai Stadium. This 80,000 seat stadium is the second in size only to the national stadium in Beijing. Aside from hosting events in the Chinese national games and 2008 Olympics, its facilities include one of China’s most challenging rock climbing walls.

Winner: Helmut & Muzi

Helmut, Muzi, here your are at the finish line again. I think everybody keep under estimate you two. You guys are fighters at every sense of the word. Muzi, I’d say Helmut was your hero today, wouldn’t you? In the final challenge racing up the wall, you couldn’t make it up. But Helmut, he raced up it, like it was nothing at all. For it, you guys finished first! Congratulations, for coming in first today, you get two nights in a deluxe suite at the Wangfujing Hilton in Beijing. Great job, we will see you in the next episode.

Last Place: Justin & Matti

You’ve making most of your second chance. In fact, you rocked and came in first in the first episode back. Today, in fact, you guys were killing it all day long. And then you got to the final challenge. Sometimes they say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. At the final challenge, neither of you can make it up the mountain. Unfortunately, you guys are off Shanghai Rush.

1.       Art deco villa

Places:

Shanghai Jiaotong University 上海交通大学

Xu Guangqi Park 光启公园

Shanghai Peking Opera House 上海歌剧院

Xujiahui Park 徐家汇公园

Longhua Temple 龙华寺

Notes:

Hudd comments on Muzi, “I love the dynamic of the Helmut and Muzi team. Muzi is just a proper proper Chinese girl. She needs her man to be doing everything for her. Anything goes wrong it’s their fault, like she is an angel.” Anna says, “We call them the Muzi Crew, coz she is guiding that crewship, like she is in charge. Helmut is doing everything. He is her slave.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nic & Liz was lagging behind. On the metro, Nic said, “The thing is I just don’t like where we are, like timing, with other people.” Liz used the task envelope to fan for Nic. Nic continued saying, “Do you know what, people mass up, and people get bad car drivers, and people get lost and you never know.”

When they are waiting for line 3, Nic said, “Usually, I have to do it like 10 minutes for the next train.” The train is coming. “Not now though. We are making it happen, ok? We are creating the smoothness, Liz!” Liz was happy, “Ok, I love your pep talks.”

When they see Hudd & Anna still at Longhua Temple, they are very pleased. Nic: “I loved to see Hudd and Anna.” Liz: “I know. Me, too. I wonder what took them so long.” Nic: “Hey, I don’t wonder. I just know where we are. And it’s neck and neck.”
